The Kinks – Are the Village Green Preservation Society by Isaac Lenkiewicz

When did you first hear this album, and what were your first impressions?

I was about 18 years old I think. I was really into everything I’d heard by The Kinks around that time, but this album got me especially excited. I just liked the images it conjured of this place and these characters. It has an incredible, autumnal air about it.

Why did you choose this album?

It’s not really an album I listen to that much these days, but I was obsessed with it for a long time and always wanted to make something based on it. The characters I’m most interested in from the album are the Phenomenal Cat, Wicked Annabella and her “tiny demons” and Mr. Songbird.

If you had to suggest one track from it, which would it be (and why?)

Wicked Annabella, I listen to this song every Halloween and always include it in Halloween playlists. I can imagine if I’d heard it as a kid it would have scared me (like how ‘No More I Love You’s‘ by Annie Lennox did), it genuinely gives me chills!

What is your own personal theme song?

Ummm… Overworld Theme from Super Mario Land by Hirokazu Tanaka. I know this is one of Mario’s personal theme songs, but he’s totally not reading this.
