When did you first hear this album, and what were your first impressions?
As a kid I remember the single U Got the Look being a hit and watching the video on Top of the Pops, but it wasn’t till years later that I listened to the whole album, during a period of buying every Prince album on CD. I was already a fan of the singles but the range of tunes (it’s a double album) blew me away.
Why did you choose this album?
It’s one of my favourite albums. It encompasses the whole spectrum of emotions, a track for every mood or feeling, while managing to be cohesive. The original cover is unusual in that it features a stage (I think from the Sign o’ the Times concert film), with Prince in the foreground, cropped and out of focus. I thought it would be interesting to try and rethink it, with a focus on the title track…
If you had to suggest one track from it, which would it be (and why?)
The title track! It had a real impact on me, especially the video which used graphics and typography to focus on the lyrics. The stories described in the lyrics still feel relevant, which is why my design is more a cover of the single than the album.
What is your favourite album cover?
Tough one. Maybe Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division. Or Rage Against The Machine by Rage Against The Machine. Or anything by Beastie Boys.
What is your favourite cover version?
Inner City Blues by Marvin Gaye
If the album you chose was to soundtrack a comic, what would it be?
